Director, Strategic and Executive Communications

Job Description

Reporting to the President and Chief Operating Officer for the Electrical Sector, the Director, Strategic and Executive Communications will create, implement and evaluate strategic leadership communications plans and content for the President and COO as well as Electrical Sector senior leadership team members. 


The incumbent will participate in all major staff meetings and attend certain critical internal and external meetings with the President and COO.  This role acts as a key advisor to the President and COO on understanding next generation employee thinking and needs.  This role will need to educate the leadership team on the use of the latest technology to improve productivity and ensure connectivity with all employees and constituents across the enterprise. The incumbent will also carry out important value added and strategic projects on behalf of the Electrical Sector that will involve significant interaction with the regional operations and will play a key role in confidential projects that often arise. 


A major focus of the projects will be linked to organic growth and key initiatives that are strategically important to the President and COO.  The incumbent will be responsible to ensure information needs are met and in place to prepare the President and COO for key internal and external meetings and presentations.  Defining and implementing a methodology to systematically study and understand competitor strategies and our responses across our various groups and regions to support organic growth and organizational alignment. 


Approximately 60% of the incumbent’s time will be on executive communications with key internal and external audiences and on guiding President and COO on the effective use of internal communications for employee engagement and our cultural evolution. Up to 40% of the incumbent’s time will be focused on externally-facing thought leadership, social media activities and strategies with leaders and supporting issues/crisis management as needed.


This position requires close alignment with the President and COO as well as the SVP Human Resources to have an understanding of key Eaton and Electrical Sector strategies as well as evolving market trends that impact the business.  Will be responsible for the creative use of forums/channels for message delivery and the analysis of feedback.


Essential Functions:

Create, implement and evaluate strategic leadership communications plans and content for the President and COO Electrical Sector including strategies around the use of social media


Develop a regular cadence of content from the Electrical Sector COO and other sector senior leaders that engages employees in our business vision and compels them to support the business objectives and plan to get there 


Write and edit internal and external communications content for the President and COO and other members of the Electrical Sector senior leadership team, including blog posts, speeches, social media posts, talking points and more.


Develop clear, concise and consistent messages that reinforces the sector strategy and priorities



Ensure communications have context by staying on top of market drivers and current trends impacting Eaton and the electrical business; have a thorough understanding of our competitor strategies to develop responses across our product groups and regions


Collaborate closely across key functions, including human resources, corporate communications, technology and regional communications teams


Counsel, train (or identify training) and coach senior leaders in best practice communications and guide business teams in the effective use of internal communications for employee engagement


Support crisis or issue management with sensitive and effective internal communications


Advise the President and COO on Next Generation Employee thinking and needs and develop strategies to address these.




Qualifications

Minimum Job Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or related field of study required; Master’s degree a plus

  • 10-15 years of experience writing in a Communications, Marketing Communications, Consumer Product Marketing or related Public Relations role

Desired experience and characteristics: 

 

  • Proven storytelling skills across multiple channels and formats

  • Digitally savvy and able to leverage new technologies for communications

  • Understanding of analytics and tools to identify content trends and assist in content planning

  • High levels of business acumen; experienced in working in a complex business environment

  • Experience in content creation, internal and external communications, digital marketing such as web content and email campaigns, direct marketing or advertising

  • Strong communication, presentation and leadership skills

  • Ability to understand communication voice and convert complex information into compelling content

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
