Eaton’s Corporate Research and Technology group, Eaton Research Labs (ERL) has an exciting and rewarding position ­of a Lead Manufacturing Engineer to join our Additive Manufacturing team. This position will be based out of our Southfield, MI facility.  Relocation assistance will be provided.

Position Overview:

Eaton’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) has an exciting opportunity for a Lead Additive Engineer who is passionate about Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) technologies.  Launched in July 2016, AM CoE scaled up rapidly, obtained AS9100D Certification, and is currently serving as a low rate initial production facility (LRIP) supplying 3D printed parts to Aerospace and other customers.  The facility operates under an innovative Lean QMS system that is first of its kind in Eaton.  Future plans include broadening capabilities beyond Laser Powder Bed Fusion into other technologies such as metal binder jetting, directed energy deposition, 3D printed electronics etc.  The Lead Additive Engineer will play an integral role in this development effort and thus, will have the unique opportunity to shape the future of Eaton’s efforts in Additive Manufacturing. 

The candidate will be responsible for developing additive products and manufacturing processes to enable industrialization. He/she will also work on additive process development and implementing improvements.

The candidate will report directly to the Leader of AM CoE.  He/she will have extensive support network from Eaton Research Labs, Aerospace Additive Manufacturing Integrated Product Teams and other business unit teams active in Additive Manufacturing across Eaton.

In this role you will:
  • Develop and document the design rules, process optimization approaches, and quality assurance processes incl. non-destructive techniques especially suited for Additive Manufacturing (AM) parts.

  • Provide application engineering to business unit teams ranging from assessing the viability of product concepts for AM to optimizing the concepts to exploit the full potential of AM

  • Collaborate with design engineers to develop and optimize additive manufacturing designs

  • Set up additive build files, post processing part inspection, analysis and process documentation

  • Collaborate with and support manufacturing engineering, quality, supply chain personnel to industrialize the applications

  • Partner with the business unit teams in ensuring that the 3D printed parts meet the functional requirements of the end customers and support qualification/ certification by external agencies as appropriate

  • Drive root cause and corrective action initiatives for additive parts and processes

  • Develop, implement, and document improvements to the additive process driving improved safety, quality, lead time, and cost. 

  • Identify and execute strategic projects to improve quality and reduce part manufacturing cost

  • Execute on projects developing new powder alloys or making improvements to existing metal powders

  • Lead the development of process specifications while staying abreast of the industry standards

  • Lead the development and delivery of virtual and hands-on training of AM concepts, technologies, and applications

  • Support the due diligence of technologies slated for investment in AM CoE

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Materials or Metallurgy Engineering from an accredited institution.

  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience with metal additive manufacturing processes and equipment.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in CAD using both 2D and 3D CAD to create, design, manipulate solid models, assemblies, layouts and detail drawings.

  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the US on a continuous basis without company sponsorship.

  • This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution

  • Prior expertise/experience with a range of metal AM technologies such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Electron Beam Melting, Binder Jetting, Cold Spray, Directed Energy Deposition, and 3D Printed Electronics. 

  • Experience in 3D CAD, design, process simulation packages

  • Experience in new product development and transitioning to production including qualification and certification
