Lead Engineer - Power Supply Design

Job Description

Eaton’s Fluid Electrical Distribution division, a part of our Aerospace sector, is currently seeking a Lead Power Supply Design Engineer to join our team. This position is based at our Torrance, CA office. Relocation assistance will be provided.


Position Overview:


This position will be responsible for detailed design; from concept to production build and documentation of switch mode DC/DC, AC/DC converters, DC/AC inverters from 5W to 10KW+, and power factor correction utilizing latest power topologies (both analog and digital controls) and technology (i.e. Wide Band Gap power devices) .


Duties may also include supporting existing products, product derivative extensions by enhancing performance levels, reducing manufacturing & product costs, and implementing quality / reliability improvements. You will lead, work, and interface with the design team members; Mechanical Engineer, PCB designer, drafting, component engineer, document control, test and validation engineering team members


The incumbent will generate reliable, cost effective, manufacturable power supply design solutions that meet or exceed the needs of customer applications as well as comply with all applicable governing regulatory standards (UL, CE, ISO, etc.) Mil and DO-160 standards


You will interface with manufacturing and quality assurance personnel in establishing quality requirements for power supply products.


You will also aid in generating technical papers, technical articles, patent disclosures, and technical discussions under the guidance of more experienced engineers.

In this function you will:
  • Administer Electrical and Electronics Engineering principles to identify and understand issues, and to generate design solutions for various product development challenges associated with power supplies.

  • Learn and integrate Design For Six Sigma tools and approaches, engineering simulation & modeling software, and phase-gate development processes for power supply design and development activities

  • Participate in the development of production tooling and assembly fixtures to enable error-proof and cost effective production of power supplies.

  • Achieve familiarity with the products of the corporation common to activity and study the engineering and products of competitors.

  • Be proficient on DC/DC conversion, AC/DC front ends, analog and digital control theory and loop compensation, use of latest wide band gap (WBG) technology especially GaN Fets, strong magnetic design , EMI, schematic capture, mechanical and thermal packaging proficiency and PCB layout

Qualifications

Required (Basic) Qualifications:
  • Must possess one of the following basic qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronics  Engineering from an accredited college or university or equivalent with 5 years minimum experience in power conversion product development; or

    • Master’s degree in Electrical/Electronics  Engineering from an accredited college or university or equivalent with 2 years minimum experience in power conversion product development; or

    • Ph.D in Electrical/Electronics  Engineering from an accredited college or university or equivalent with  Experience in power conversion product development

  • This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Background in UL compliance requirements, Mil Stds and DO-160 are preferred

  • Master’s in Electrical Engineering preferred

  • Project management knowledge and experience or engineering management courses is a plus

  • A subject matter expert for DC/DC and AC/DC Power Supplies design and development

  • Knowledge of planar magnetics and PCB layout of critical voltage and current loops

  • Specializes in GaN and Silicon Carbide wide band gap technology, control loop , magnetics design, and  EMI

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in Solidworks or Altium – highly recommended

  • Minimum of 1 year experience with high density and high power design technology and spice based simulation tools.

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in GaN and Silicon Carbide wide band gap technology

  • Minimum of 1 year experience and familiarity with various Power Conversion topologies especially high power density topologies

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in computer simulation and modeling software (stress, thermal, circuit analysis, magnetics, etc.)

  • Minimum of 1 year experience with control loop , magnetics design, and  EMI.
 
Position Criteria:
  • Understands the needs of other functional areas and provides cooperation to benefit overall engineering and business goals.

  •  Builds and leverages key relationships across various business units/functions

  • Drives the use of tools such as DFMEA, DFT and DFM design techniques to ensure development of robust design specifications, design guidelines, model and drawing detailing, design validation plans that produce reliable and sound design solutions.

  • Work with commercial and product management teams to generate technical proposal, pricing and overall solutions to meet customer’s RFQs and requirements.

  • Contributes to strategic direction and advancement of current product technology and development of new technology and product feature sets, to drive value propositions that command a premium for the associated products.

  • Must be capable of writing technical documents such as test procedures, test reports, and patent disclosures, technical proposals

  • Must be team oriented, with excellent interpersonal skills and effective communication.

  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
