Eaton’s Fuel & Motion Control Systems Division, a part of our Aerospace sector, is currently seeking a Lead Design Engineer to join our team. This position is based at our Grand Rapids, MI facility. Relocation assistance will be provided.
The Lead Design Engineer is responsible providing technical direction for the development of complex hardware/software for the new product development of aerospace electro-mechanical actuation products to meet design, manufacturability, and assembly requirements. In this role, you will provide leadership and guidance to the engineering team internally.
The position necessitates that the incumbent has knowledge and capabilities of engineering management, including budgeting and expense tracking, project management, product reliability testing, personnel development, innovation, and inclusion & diversity.
The incumbent will design and direct testing of development concepts, participate in preparation of general test procedures and specifications in conjunction with engineering assignments. They will advise laboratory personnel relative to equipment operation specifications, test requirements and procedures while assisting in evaluation of test results to determine equipment design and material modification requirements.

Establish a conceptual approach with the assistance of the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer and complete Engineering layouts and parts lists meeting schedule and budget goals.
Perform a variety of design and engineering calculations generally involving the application of standard mathematical formulas or available data. May derive formulas for solution of engineering problems.
Participate in the preparation of engineering proposals by compiling, preparing, and/or providing technical data. Prepare and submit various reports related to assignment.
Lead failure investigations to determine root cause and corrective action.
Champion process adherence and improvement across the engineering organization and enforces adherence to processes and standards on assigned programs.
Contribute to the growth of Eaton Actuation Systems Division through participation and contribution to process improvements, team activities, and goals.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution.
Minimum of 5 years in design engineering or product development
Minimum of 2 years of technical leadership
Minimum of 1 year working in a regulated environment (aerospace, automotive, medical device)
Must be able to work in the United States without corporate sponsorship now and within the future
This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
Advanced degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution
Experience with new product development
- Aerospace Experience
8-10 years relevant experience in the design of mechanical components.
Working knowledge of FEA (Failure Effects Analysis) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and software programs used in their assessment (ANSYS).
Thorough understanding of aerospace manufacturing processes, tolerances, and materials/mechanics of materials. Working knowledge of machining, turning, grinding, heat treat operations, etc. and how these processes affect product design.
Utilize “Design for Manufacturing” skills early and often in the design pro
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management, engineers, customers or the general public.
Manage assigned tasks and team tasks to meet schedule and budget.
Analyze and/or interpret customer design specifications.
Define problems, analyze data and draw valid conclusions that result in solid recommendations.
High level of energy and personal drive.
Strong project management and organization skills.
Interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence and technical documents.
