Eaton’s Fuel & Motion Control division, a part of our Aerospace sector, is currently seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer to join our team. This position is based at our Grand Rapids, MI facility.  Relocation assistance will be provided within the United States and Puerto Rico.

Position Overview:

The Lead Mechanical Engineer will drive the development of aerospace electromechanical actuators and subcomponents, including, but not limited to, gears, bearings, ball screws, clutches, breaks, housings, and electrical motors. The candidate for the role will be responsible for engineering analysis planning and completing and/or delegating the complete analysis using ANSYS, MATLAB, MathCAD, and/or Excel. You will also complete and approve entire system sizing of actuator, using Pro/Engineer or CATIA to complete detail packaging/3D Modeling.

The primary role of the lead engineer include managing the mechanical portion of both large and small development projects, supporting new products and sustaining projects for current production products and components. They will work with Supply Chain, leading engineering efforts with component suppliers and provide final approval of component specifications

The incumbent will manage all mechanical engineering aspects of development including requirements, including design, development, qualification, and supplier technical management. The role will report to the New Product Development Engineering Manager.

In this function you will:
  • Manage system sizing, modeling, component design calculations, and simulation to ensure required actuator performance.

  • Develop mechanical concepts and mechanical non-recurring estimate for new business proposals.

  • Plan test and qualification activities for development projects, participates in qualification activities, and provide final engineering approval for test qualification plans and final reports. You will make final evaluation of test results and be responsible for engineering functional objectives and initiatives in support of our strategic plan.

  • Organize, plan, and complete schedules for the mechanical and technical aspects of their entire program. This includes tracking engineering action items, managing the engineering project budget, expense management, and capital planning.

  • Provide formal and informal updates to the Engineering Manager and Program Manager, leading in design reviews and roundtable discussions.

  • Enforce existing processes and standards for related engineering programs; this includes writing new processes and/or improving existing processes or standards.

Required (Basic) Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution

  • Minimum of 7 years of mechanical engineering experience.

  • Must be able to work in the United States without corporate sponsorship now and within the future

  • This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution

  • The ideal candidate will have hands-on domain expertise in the following:

    • Mechanical mechanisms (including ball screws or jack screws, linkages, gear boxes)

  • Experience using CATIA CAD or Pro/Engineer CAD

  • Experience using ANSYS
  • Experience designing to a requirement, budget, and schedule

  • Hands-on build and assembly experience
  • Knowledge of weight, stress, and design considerations

  • Experience with ASME Y14.5
  • Experience conducting trade studies
