Heat Treat Engineer/Metallurgist

Job Description

Eaton’s Vehicle division is currently seeking a Heat Treat Engineer/Metallurgist to join our team. This position is based at our Kings Mountain, NC facility.


The Heat Treat Engineer/Metallurgist is responsible for providing day-to-day engineering support and expertise for the Heat Treat operations involved in the manufacture of transmission gears and shafts.  In this role, you will develop and implement improvements to the Heat Treat manufacturing processes, including new equipment or process improvements, and proposing and implementing capital projects for Heat Treat operations.  In this role, you will support the metallurgical analysis for the heat treat operation.

  • You will drive safety awareness of heat treat processes and equipment health; understand the technical and risks associated with heat treat. Improve, sustain, and reinforce all Environment, Health, and Safety (MESH) initiatives and procedures for heat treat. You will conduct safety inspections.

  • You will advise plant staff personnel on daily production status and any operational risks.

  • You will monitor machinery and equipment; initiate maintenance work orders as required to ensure safe, efficient, and effective working conditions. You will schedule preventative maintenance on machines and equipment.  You will oversee capital projects for equipment improvements as needed.

  • You will understand and analyze data from quality and metallurgical tests and checks, both production and prototype runs. You will verify properties to ensure department is positively affecting product quality (hardness, part specifications)

  • You will schedule, execute, and perform improvements around annual CQI-9 audit.

  • You will support training and re-training (safety, quality, CQI-9, OJT, etc.) within the department as needed to enable personnel to better perform their roles. Includes deliver training content.

  • You will promote and drive continuous improvement and standardization to current heat treat processes by utilizing tools such as Value Stream Mapping, A3’s, 8D’s, Rapid Improvement Events, and other tools and methodologies. Ensure standard work and processes are updated as necessary.

  • You will promote the company’s mission and vision by actively supporting Eaton’s Values and Philosophies, Code of Ethics, and Quality policies.

  • You will prepare reports to monitor key metrics for the Heat Treat department and drive improvement. Execute actions to support the plant High 5 goals.

  • You will provide back up support and training for destructive testing and analysis for welded production assemblies, including basic operation of a computer controlled wet saw.

  • You will provide recommendation for rework processes for heat treat loads

  • You will support training and functionality of the etching process to ensure components do not experience grinder burn.

Qualifications

Required (Basic) Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Technical-Related field from an accredited institution.

  • Minimum of (2) two years of metallurgy work experience.

  • Must be authorized to work in The United States without company sponsorship now or in the future.

     
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering
  • Minimum of (5) five years of experience combined between formal metallurgical education and heat treat experience in a manufacturing or operations environment.
  • Experience with case carburizing and quenching
  • Knowledge of pusher furnaces
  • Knowledge of shot peening process
  • Experience leading CQI-9 audit
  • Certified weld inspector
  • Working knowledge of basic manufacturing tools such as Lean, Six-Sigma, problem solving/decision making, labor balancing and quality management systems (TS, ISO
