Optical Design Engineer
Eaton’s Electrical Product Group is seeking an Optical Design Engineer for its Crouse-Hinds Division Airport Lighting Business. The Optical Design Engineer position will be located at its Windsor, CT facility.
The position of Optical Design Engineer will report to the Director of Engineering and be a subject matter expert for the optical performance of the airport lighting product lines. The successful candidate will be responsible for continuing development of Crouse-Hinds light fixtures, signs, and other products with optical components. The candidate should be experienced in LightTools and other related design tools for optical engineering. The successful candidate will be a key resource for the ALP Engineering team in helping to innovate our LED and incandescent based products for the next generation of airfield lighting applications.

You will design and develop new optical solutions for products to meet internal and external customer requirements for advancement of the airfield product lines.
You will support obsolescence management and refinements to existing products to maintain competitiveness of the existing product lines.
You will collaborate across engineering disciplines and other functions of the business to ensure products meet schedule, budget, performance and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) objectives.
You will lead the optical quality testing and product certification strategies for all new and existing products.
You will be responsible for ensuring the completion of comprehensive design reviews, design analysis & documentation, qualification and validation testing of work output to meet, program/project requirements, specifications, quality/reliability, and successful product release.
You will support all aspects of product introduction and manufacturing as needed.
You will maintain technical leadership skills in subject area through ongoing self-training and company assigned training.
You will travel domestically and internationally as required for customer meetings, to participate in industry standards meetings, and installation and/or commissioning of products.

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from accredited university
A minimum of (7) years in an equivalent optical engineering role, specifically illumination & lighting products design

No relocation benefit is being offered for this position. Only candidates that currently reside within a 50 mile radius of Windsor, CT will be considered.
Master’s degree in Engineering, with an Optical or Physics concentration preferred
Experience designing highly specified illumination patterns
Familiarity with LED and incandescent source illumination design including thermal and reliability management
System design experience satisfying color requirements for illumination or display applications
Experience using mechanical design tools such as SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD
Familiarity with airfield lighting systems and specifications including FAA, TP312, and ICAO.
Experience designing illumination systems to specific brightness and beam shape requirements
Working knowledge of color science and design
Must be able to drive a product from initial specifications into design, prototype, verification and qualification testing, support pilot runs and maintain the product post release
Computer literate and familiar with the following: MS Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SAP)
Specific experience with optical system simulation tools such as LightTools
Ability to wear all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required and comply with all Eaton Safety policies
Must be able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in English
Must be able to work with all levels within the organization
