Senior Specialist Engineer - Circuit Protection
Eaton’s Corporate Research and Technology (CRT) has an exciting and rewarding position of a Senior Research Engineer in electromechanical actuation and circuit protection engineering to initiate, lead, and support research and technology development in emerging technology programs. This position will be based at our Menomonee Falls WI facility.
The job function includes developing and testing innovative solutions for circuit protection and actuation technologies and identifying market opportunities for the new technologies, supporting businesses to evaluate market studies and developing business cases. The individual will also identify internal and external funding resources, lead discussions with national labs and university leaders to be on top of the key technologies identified. A key role will be to lead customer relationships, present ideas and projects to Eaton business leaders and CRT leadership. The candidate must have the ability to communicate complicated technologies in a clear and concise way to a variety of different audiences (business leaders, technical colleagues and lay people). A good blend of technical knowledge and strong business acumen is required to be successful in this position.

You will lead technology strategy and execution for emerging electromechanical actuation and circuit protection solutions based on breakthrough technologies in industrial, automotive, truck, and aerospace applications. This includes acquiring resources, funding and establishing key partnerships both internally and externally to drive technological advancement.
You will advance the state of the art of electromechanical actuation and circuit protection technologies, as well as identify and develop commercialization opportunities with diverse Eaton businesses.
You will be responsible for meeting the schedule, scope, cost and technical targets for all research and development efforts under his/her control.
You will serve as a subject matter expert within the areas of electromagnetic actuation (electromagnetics, electromagnetic materials, electrodynamics, mechanical dynamics) and circuit protection (electrical contacts, arc extinguishing, circuit interruption) for Eaton. This includes developing and maintaining relationships with the external technical community and academia, active participation in industry or technical groups and events, publishing papers, etc.
As a subject matter expert internally, you will own technical leadership and collaborate with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural globally distributed teams, mentor junior staff and consult with internal business customers and engineering staff.
You will identify, analyze, develop and validate advanced technologies in the fields of electromechanical actuation and circuit protection.
You will serves as Principal Investigator in government proposal preparation and/or project execution of projects and those considered white space for Eaton.

PhD in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution is required.
5 years’ industrial or entrepreneurial experience in one of the following fields: electromagnetic actuation (electromagnetics, electromagnetic materials, electrodynamics, mechanical dynamics) and circuit protection (electrical contacts, arc extinguishing, circuit interruption, solid ).
Extensive experience in electromagnetic actuation and circuit protection as applied to low and medium voltage power conversion systems from concept development to hardware validation.
Extensive experience in electrodynamics and mechanical dynamics as applied to high speed actuators and mechanisms from concept development to hardware validation.
Extensive experience in electrical contacts and circuit interruption as applied to low and medium voltage power conversion systems from concept development to hardware validation.
Experience in electromagnetic principles and analysis techniques; magnetic saturation, core loss, resonance, proximity effects, parasitic capacitance, leakage inductance, impedance analysis, eddy currents etc.
Design, analysis, and test of electromagnetic actuator components and systems.
Design, analysis, and test of circuit protection components and systems.
Experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of electromagnetics and/or multi-physics modeling and analysis (Matlab/Simulink, MathCad, ANSYS MAXWELL, COMSOL etc.)
Experience in properties and applications of soft magnetic materials (silicon steel, Amorphous metal, ferrite, nanocrystalline, iron-alloy powder, etc.).
Experience in all modes of heat transfer (convection, conduction, radiation, phase change) in electric systems, and a good understanding of fluid dynamics.
Thermal properties of various materials (metals, plastics, ceramics, liquids, gases, rubbers, polymers, grease, adhesives, phase change materials) and their applications in electric systems.
Experience in design, analysis and test of thermal systems (air cooling, liquid cooling, phase change etc.)
Experience in simulation of thermal systems using thermal network analysis and CFD (Fluent, Icepak, etc.)
Experience in manufacturing, testing and specifying thermal components and equipment used in low and medium voltage applications.
