Job Description

Eaton’s Equipment Life Extension and Modernization division has an opening for a Design Engineer to join our team. This position will be based out of our Warrendale, PA office.


The Design Engineer will be responsible for the layout and design of custom conversion solutions for metal enclosed and metal-clad switchgear components for low voltage (LV) and medium voltage (MV) applications to meet customer specifications and industry standards.  Individual must be capable of self-management and shall work as part of a cross-functional team to develop specifications, bill of materials, mechanical and/or electrical design layouts, assembly and detail drawings and models utilizing AutoDesk Inventor or equivalent software. Individual shall consult with engineers, manufacturing, marketing and supply chain when required to solve problems.  Individual shall demonstrate the ability to identify and meet project schedules and budgets.  Responsibilities include interpreting customer requirements, identify and addressing design parameters and engineering problems and ensuring solutions are implemented accurately and within budget.  Participation in assembly, design testing and documentation of life extension solutions is also required.  Additional responsibilities include providing technical support to external and internal customers.

  • You will understand and follow prescribed Eaton’s Electrical Engineering Services and Systems (EESS) safety policies, pertaining to shop and field environments.
  • You will travel to customer sites to collect field measurements of customer’s existing equipment
  • You will use CAD to create a custom design solutions to apply Eaton Power Components into vintage power distribution equipment.
  • You will develop unique approaches to adapt current technology into obsolete equipment.
  • You will generate bill of materials, submittal drawings, and assembly drawings in AutoDesk Inventor or equivalent software.
  • You will work with Electrical Engineers to solve customer control issues & requirements.
  • You will work with suppliers to assemble field installation kits for use by EESS field service engineers.
  • You will ensure proper manufacture of custom engineered materials.
  • You will resolve installation issues and solve problems during project execution.
  • You will occasionally travel to job sites to supervise installation of final solution.

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Must have training and/or experience working with AutoDesk Inventor, Pro-E, or Solidworks. 
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now or in the future.
  • All candidates must reside within a 50 mile radius of the work location listed. No relocation will be offered for this position.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to perform mechanical assembly and functional tests is preferred.
  • Some knowledge of electrical power systems is desirable. 
  • Ability to read engineering drawings of complex assemblies and detail components.
  • Mechanical aptitude and knowledge and use of hand tools and basic machine tools. 
  • Ability to use precision measurement tools and layout techniques desired.


Position Success Criteria:

  • Strong Computer Skills; Knowledge of MS Office; Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • This position requires up to 25% travel anywhere in North America.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are necessary for success.
  • Assist in application of solution and generation of quotes
  • Attend product training to maintain a high level of product knowledge
  • Participate and contribute to process improvements
  • Must possess good interpersonal skills and enjoy a fast paced environment with the ability to manage multiple activities at the same time and flexibility to adjust to changing project conditions.
