Lead Engineer- Controls Development (eMobility)

Job Description


This position is part of a team developing next generation powertrain embedded control systems.  As a key member of the team, you will help define requirements, contribute to definition of electronics hardware design, design embedded system software architecture and algorithm solutions, define test plans and perform validation testing to confirm that system and functional requirements are met.  In this role, you will be responsible for working with team members and your engineering manager to estimate development, resources and timing to achieve the desired results. You will have the opportunity to be mentored and trained by senior level embedded controls engineers and software architects to help grow your overall expertise and you will be expected to train and mentor less experienced engineers. You will work with engineers located in other locations in the U.S., India and China.
  • Demonstrated leadership on software and controls engineering projects. Deep understanding of software development cycles and processes.
  • Understanding of vehicle dynamics and experience with on-vehicle embedded software testing and validation including Software-In-the-Loop, Processor-In-the-Loop and Hardware-In-the-Loop. Familiarity with vehicle communication protocols and calibration toolchains and processes.
  • Help define embedded system level and algorithm requirements to meet product performance and reliability requirements. Help define and improve embedded controls standards and processes, and contribute to industry technical papers and conferences.
  • Invent and develop embedded control system strategies and lead architecture design to achieve solutions.  Use debugging and simulation tools to efficiently perform design iterations and optimization.  Verify solutions created by you or other team members through simulation, sub-system, hardware-in-the-loop and vehicle level testing.
  • Drive implementation consistency across multiple resources contributing to the same embedded system architecture.  Champion and document improvements to the engineering standard work processes we use to engineer our products.
  • Utilize FMEA process to enhance design robustness. Contribute to continued enhancement of Core Embedded Software to support additional product features.
  •  Develop validation and verification test plans at a unit, sub-system and vehicle level to fully validate requirements. Analyze vehicle data from test and customer vehicles to investigate, identify, and resolve issues and performance complaints


Education and Skills required to meet position qualifications:
  • Masters of Science degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering discipline from a nationally accredited university. 
  • 10 to 12 years relevant experience with embedded control system applications or relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience with vehicle communication bus and software protocols.
  • Experience with Object-Oriented Matlab code/module generation.
•             Matlab/Simulink/Stateflow
•             Understanding of Embedded Coder and Code Generation process
•             Understanding of Embedded Systems
•             Experience working with CANape, CANalyzer,  ClearCase, ClearQuest tools.
•             Knowledge of MAAB Guidelines and J1939 standards.
•             Knowledge of CMMI Process.
•             Strong written, oral communication and interpersonal skills – experience working in International teams is highly recommended
Preferred/Additional Specialized Knowledge (not required to be qualified for position):
  • Ph.D. degree in electrical, controls, software or relevant engineering field
  • Experience in embedded software development (C++, Model-based software, Simulink)
  • Expertise with Controller Area Networks (e.g. SAE-J1939, CANOpen)
  • Expertise with Vector tools such as CANape and CANalyzer.
  • The ideal candidate would have experience in, or knowledge of automotive drivetrain/powertrain systems and components.
  • Project management skills to assess task effort, manage priorities, and report status.
  • Good communication skills with ability to interface directly with external partners, suppliers, and both internal and external customers.
  • Experience with change management and software release processes in a team environment
  • Awareness of DFSS tools like FMEA.FMECA, Monte Carlo Analysis etc.
  • Experience working with HILS environment like dSPACE, ETAS.
  • Analytical Modeling of dynamical systems.
  • C/C++ knowledge
  • Object Oriented Software Design Methodology
  • Scripting languages
  • Software engineering skills
  • Calibration development
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and recommend solutions
  • Troubleshooting Electronic Control Units (ECU)
  • Using Debugging tools such as Lauterbach or other In-circuit Emulators (ICE)
Special Skills:
  • Knowledge of Requirement management tools preferably DOORS, Rhapsody.
  • Knowledge of Reliability for Embedded system Design.
