Eaton’s B-Line division is currently seeking a Senior Product Engineer to join our team. This position will be based at our Worcester, MA facility.
 
A Senior Product Engineer is responsible for the conceptualization, system architecture, mechanical design and verification of new product platform solutions that meet the stated market requirements for performance, cost, safety, schedules, aesthetics and manufacturability.  The Senior Engineer - Product is also responsible for the mechanical design and verification of new product extensions to existing product platforms and for customized applications of existing products.  Additionally, the Senior Engineer - Product is responsible to contribute engineering support for Continuous Improvement efforts related to increasing customer satisfaction, process improvements and cost containment.

Essential Functions:
  • Develops new standard portfolio products: Employs a disciplined use of ProLaunch (phase-gate NPD process) and Design for Six Sigma principles to ensure timely and cost effective product development and introduction.  Drives accountability and execution of results to target dates and ensures attainment of project goals including design features/functions, mfg. cost, capital investment, regulatory compliance, safety, schedule, plus other aspects.
  • Participates in Voice of the Customer processes to understand “pain” to be solved and crafts specifications and modular architectures for new products and product platforms.
  • Participates in the ergonomic/industrial design aspects of product development and blends human factors criteria with styling aesthetics into designs
  • Executes product and systems engineering tasks including technical and functional performance requirements, mechanical and thermal design, mechanical property analysis, materials, 3rd party components, 3D parametric solid models, and 2D production drawings.
  • Executes Design for Six Sigma disciplines relating to (but not limited to) critical quality characteristics and failure mode analyses.
  • Works closely with operations and manufacturing to ensure products meet quality and performance requirements, cost targets, DFMA requirements, along with tooling investments
  • Defines test standards and perform developmental testing to assess product performance and compliance to industry standards, establishing operating and usage parameters. Establish verification and validation plans along with test specimens, and manage the execution of said plans using internal and external testing resources. Confirm and analyze the results of testing and develop corrective actions as required.
  • Serves as technical lead for all installation documents related to a product introduction, creating written instructions and illustrations for assembly guides.
  • Creates Engineered to Order (ETO) adaptations and customizations of existing products to meet the unique needs of targeted customers.
  • Participates in the coordination and scheduling of ETO’s based on cross functional input related to potential revenue and strategic urgency.
  • Executes engineering tasks including technical, functional, safety and regulatory requirements and creates 3D parametric solid models, and 2D production drawings.
  • Works with Sales, Marketing, customers and Operations to ensure designs align with customers’ expectations, production capabilities and cost parameters
  • Participates in the coordination of international engineering resources in support of ETO.
  • Participates in Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives
  • Implements value analysis/value engineering (VAVE) projects to achieve annual cost reduction goals.
  • Contributes to product development process improvements and serves as subject matter expert in one or more internal ISO 2015 design engineering procedures.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution
  • 4 or more years of experience as a Product Development Engineer.
  • Must be able to work in the United States without corporate sponsorship now and within the future.
  • No relocation benefit is being offered for this position.  Only candidates within a 50 mile radius of the work location will be considered
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Prior experience in designing and engineering products and product platforms using a phase/gate methodology.  Experience in either Data Center infrastructure / thermal management, or office furniture design is preferred along with a working knowledge of applicable industry standards.
  • Experience in applying Six Sigma design concepts related to driving critical to quality parameters using Voice of Customer input, and application of DFMA and DpFMEA (etc).
Position Criteria
  • A proficient knowledge of sheet metal fabrication and welding methods. Also a broad scope of applicable knowledge in other related design and processing disciplines including (but not limited to) plastic injection molding, plastic and aluminum extrusion, casting, wood fabrication, machining, etc.
  • Creative problem solving, strong communication, presentation and technical writing skills
  • A team oriented and self-motivated individual with strong project management skills and the ability to manage and prioritize several concurrent projects. The position requires an individual that has the ability to manage teams and overcome obstacles to meet project requirements.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations related to stress and strength. Analytical skills related to the use of FEA (such as Ansys) and (or) CFD (such as Flowtherm) is desirable.
  • Proficient knowledge of the relationship of ergonomic and aesthetic industrial design concepts as they relate to user interactive product design.
  • Proficient usage of 3D Parametric solid modeling software (preferably SolidWorks with a working knowledge of Creo) and a working knowledge of ASTM Y14 drafting standards.  Also strong computer skills with a working knowledge of typical business applications such as MS Office, AS400, SAP.
