Eaton’s Corporate Research and Technology (CRT) has an exciting and rewarding position of a Principal Engineer in Power Conversion to initiate, lead, and support research and technology development in emerging technology programs.  The Power Conversion Engineer will be based at our Menomonee Falls WI location
 
Primary Responsibility:
 
The Principal Engineer is a member of the Corporate Research & Technology’s, Power Systems Technologies department, reporting to the Technology Manager or Global Technology Director.
The Principal Engineer is expected to own the technology strategy and execution for broad applications within the Power Conversion team. This includes acquiring resources, funding and establishing key partnerships both internally and externally to drive technological advancement. They will be responsible for meeting the schedule, scope, cost, technical targets and report preparation for all research and development efforts under his/her control.
 
The Principal Engineer should serve as a subject matter expert within the area of Power Conversion for Eaton. This includes developing and maintaining relationships with the external technical community and academia, active participation in industry or technical groups and events, publishing papers, etc. Finally as a subject matter expert internally, the Principal Engineer will be expected to mentor junior staff and consult with internal business & engineering customers

Primary Functions:
  • Leads complex global technology realization programs/projects involving multiple stakeholders external to Eaton utilizing our internal project execution processes, including project reviews, design reviews, and technical reviews. (external partners include universities, National Labs, government entities, manufacturing partners, etc.)
  • As a technical leader, create emerging power conversion & power system solutions based on breakthrough technologies for industrial, automotive, truck, and aerospace applications.
  • Lead and develop technology projects by working with teams (local and remote resources) and external technology resources (Business Divisions, Universities and Customers).
  • Advance state of the art power electronics, power systems, and power converter technologies, as well as identify and develop commercialization opportunities with diverse Eaton businesses.
  • Own technical leadership and collaborate with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural globally distributed teams, provide technical direction and mentor younger engineers.
  • Understand program/project risks and is able to influence key stakeholders to make pivot/persevere decisions
  • Influences, resolves and  communicates major changes in projects or programs to cross functional teams across all levels in the company
  • Serve as (or support) Program Managers in the development of detailed project plans and value proposition. Lead globally diverse cross-functional project teams effectively and manage selected projects under the guidelines of our internal stage-gate process
Essential Functions:
 
  • Identify, analyze, develop and validate advanced technologies in the fields of Power Conversion and Power Systems.
  • Initiate, lead and support global technology programs utilizing Eaton’s product development processes including Business Reviews, Technology Reviews, and Project Reviews.
  • Participate in technology strategy development along with Eaton’s Businesses and lead development technology road maps.
  • Lead and support technology development projects, coordinate global teams (Eaton Business Divisions, Universities, National Labs and Customers).
  • Create project plans, manage budgets and resources, and deliver results on budget and schedule.
  • Engage with and manage stakeholder relationships - Business Divisions in the US and globally.
  • Manage large projects with partners from national labs, universities and other research institutes.
  • Build global organizational capabilities in power conversion and power systems.
  • Invited to partner with sales during customer visits discussing customer needs, Eaton capabilities and future technologies
  • Serves as Principal Investigator in government proposal preparation and/or project execution of large projects and those considered white space for Eaton
  • Leads ideation events (Innovation Summits, Design Bursts, etc.)
  • Performs tech scouting for Eaton (monitoring technology landscape for the future)
  • Initiates and develops solid relationships with both engineering and business leaders at the highest levels within Eaton  to drive strong business cases for new commercial applications and acquire needed resources and funding
  • Able to sell ideas and bring business unit funding to CRT
  • Strategically identify leading external partnerships, outside technologies and best practices for multiple applications within Eaton that has cross alignment to multiple technology platforms and business strategies
  • Leads open innovation events with universities and external institutes that align with Power Block strategy
  • Widely recognized as a subject matter expert and game changer externally and internally. This includes leadership/active participation in external industry and technical groups, mentoring junior level staff and consulting internal business and engineering partners.
  • Sets IP strategy with business unit stakeholders and actively contributes  to IP generation
  • Leads (or plays major role) in department and CRT process improvements

Qualifications

Required (Basic) Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited instutiion.
  • 25 years of extensive experience in system architecture of low and medium voltage power conversion and power systems engineering, including creating specifications, defining application space, designing technical solution concepts, and building and testing prototypes to validate models/hypotheses and documenting results.
  • 25 years of extensive expertise in the following areas: Medium voltage motor drive technology, drive/converter topologies, high-power electronics; electric machines and controls; electrification of vehicles, energy storage, and grid connected converters; alternative power generation and distribution.
  • 25 years of extensive experience in modeling power converters and power systems using simulation tools (example: MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, Simplorer, PSIM and/or PSCAD).
  • 15 years of experience in power electronic electromechanical packaging techniques; understanding of the effects of parasitic capacitance/inductance on circuit performance, familiarity with techniques for the minimization and/or control of parasitics, familiarity with voltage creepage and clearance requirements and various insulation and interconnection techniques; familiarity with various power electronic component cooling techniques, etc.
  • Experience with the design and analysis of magnetic components for power electronics circuits—such as high-frequency inductors and transformers—and an extensive knowledge of the materials and construction techniques and how they affect their characteristics.
  • Experience with power distribution system design, analysis and protection.
  • Experience with real time simulators such as DSPACE, OPAL-RT and/or RTDS.
  • Experience with proven track record in new technology development with multiple stakeholders in a matrixed organizations.
 
Preferred Qualifications (Not required to be qualified for the job).
  • PhD degree or MSc degree
  • Entrepreneurial experience or related commercial experience.
  • Experience in leading government funded projects and proposals. 
  • Experience with C++, HDL and/or other real-time control development software/firmware.
  • Experience with circuit design, filtering, analog/digital converters, sensor interfaces, control circuitry and architectures.
  • Certified DFSS Green Belt or Black Belt.
