Eaton’s Vehicle Division is currently seeking a Lead Controls Engineer to join our team. This position can be based at our Southfield, Galesburg or Grand Rapids MI locations.
 
Position overview:
 
Eaton Corporation has an opening in its Industrial Sector Software and Controls Center of Excellence (CoE) team for a Lead Controls Engineer.  The primary function of this role is to support the research and investigation of new motor controls solutions for Industrial Sector embedded products

Essential Functions:
  • Build analytical models of electric motor and analyze design, controls strategy and performance trade-offs.
  • Develop motor control algorithms for electric drive systems consisting of inverters and permanent magnet brushless motors and induction machines.
  • Achieve desired motor performance by optimizing closed loop current control in normal and field weakened mode.
  • Simulate and implement sensorless BLDC motor controls strategy for production application
  • Characterize motor torque, speed and system efficiency over operating range and duty cycle.
  • Develop test procedures to validate motor controls strategy, performance and efficiency.  Co-ordinate with the test labs to execute test plan and acquire data for analysis.
  • Organize, lead, manage and champion projects including new and existing product redesign by utilizing both in-hours and external resources.
  • Lead external partners and internal engineering resources on the integration work between motor inverter, controls model interface points, tool drivers and other intelligent embedded systems.
  • Build and maintain working relationships with the controls engineering organization, other functional groups and customers.

Qualifications

Required (Basic) Qualifications:
  • Bachelors in Engineering from an accredited institution
  • 4 years of experience in analysis and control of electromechanical systems
  • 4 years of experience in Matlab/Simulink/Stateflow
 
Preferred Qualifications: (Not required to be qualified for the role)
  • Masters in Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Experience with automotive communication protocols and tools.
  • Experience modeling software architecture in terms of components and interfaces with particular emphasis on code re-usability and maintainability.
  • Experience with various software development methodologies and tools (agile, iterative, waterfall, etc.).
  • Experience with processes and tools for requirements management, change and configuration management.
  • Experience with software test methodologies and tools and development of test plans for embedded systems.
  • Experience integrating and validating performance of electro-mechanical systems.
  • Experience with auto-coding methodologies and technologies.
  • Experience with Stateflow
Position Success Criteria:
  • Knowledge of functional safety and development processes compliant to safety standards (ex. ISO 26262, IEC 61508).
  • Background in powertrain, electro-hydraulics or industrial automation.
