Job Description

This position is responsible for the purchase of raw materials and production consumables.  Reviewing and analysing purchase requisitions, investigating and developing sources of supply; prepares routine bid specifications, issues bid requests and reviews quotations.  Administering and managing purchasing activities to ensure the most cost effective purchase of resources, maintaining adequate levels of inventory and ensuring consistency of product quality to support site targets and objectives.
The position requires the use of initiative and independent judgement, acting as a liaison between user departments and vendors. This must be accomplished in accordance with prescribed purchasing regulations and procedures and within the framework of the organisation's overall corporate and division policies, plans, and programs.
Key Tasks
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with key internal customers in order to gain an understanding of their needs to improve the service provided.
  • Liaise with relevant departments to identify requirements and agree fit for purpose specifications to achieve maximum value.
  • Manage supplier relationships in a professional and effective manner.
  • Negotiate and manage supply contracts in line with established procedures, on behalf of the Business for the provision of all stock items in the most cost-effective manner, ensuring that goods are scheduled in accordance with production requirements.
  • Interpret market information and apply knowledge accordingly in the management and development of contracts.
  • Monitor supplier performance in conjunction with relevant personnel (e.g. Managers, Team Leaders, Technical, Quality) to ensure compliance with contractual agreements and provide assistance in situation of claims and disputes.
  • Undertake ad-hoc project work in a professional and timely manner.
  • Working closely with the relevant people, consider and develop innovative solutions for reducing costs, including process improvements
  • Maintain own level of knowledge in order to provide an effective service to internal customers and to identify current trends and best practice within the industry and professional purchasing community.
  • Ensure the required management information, including cost and other variances, is provided in an accurate and timely manner – including recording, monitoring and reporting of Monthly KPI’s.
  • Expedite orders and provide advance warning to the Team Leaders when a delivery / supplier problem is anticipated within the  Tier process.
  • Ensure SAP master data is maintained for ROL, ROQ and strategies to ensure effective purchasing.
  • Ensure tasks and output is to acceptable standards in accordance with Company Quality Policy and procedures.
  • Observe and adopt safe working practices in accordance with Company health and safety policy and all relevant health and safety legislation; i.e. HASAWA 1974 etc.
  • Communicate problems affecting role or responsibilities to Manager.
  • Carry out Supplier Quality Audits as required.


  • Full or part-qualified CIPS or equivalent.
    Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
    Computer literate, including MS Office
    Experience with SAP R2C
    At least 2 years’ experience of working as a Buyer - ideally within a manufacturing environment.
    Auditing experience.
    Product knowledge. (To be developed)

This role is offered as a temporary 6 month contract with a review of the role prior to the expiry of the contract.
