Eaton’s Fuel Motion Control Division is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will be based in Grand Rapids, MI.
Positon Overview:
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for providing engineering support to vendors, customers and internal departments on mature programs. Also, provides mechanical design concepts for proposals and more detailed design and analysis for new programs
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Establish a conceptual approach with the assistance of the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer and complete Engineering layouts and parts lists meeting schedule and budget goals. 
  • Prepare proposal drawings as required under the supervision of the Lead Mechanical Engineer.
  • Perform a variety of design and engineering calculations generally involving the application of standard mathematical formulas or available data. May derive formulas for solution of engineering problems.
  • Supervise Detail Design in completion of detail drawings.
  • Design and direct testing of development concepts. Participate in preparation of general test procedures and specifications in conjunction with engineering assignments. Advise laboratory personnel relative to equipment operation specifications, test requirements and procedures, etc., and assist in evaluation of test results to determine equipment design and material modification requirements with the support of the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer.
  • Analyze and/or interpret customer design specs.
  • Prepare material for and participate/present in design reviews. 
  • Participate in the preparation of engineering proposals by compiling, preparing, and/or providing technical data. Prepare and submit various reports related to assignment.
  • Provide support to Sustaining Engineering, ECO activities and Discrepancy Tag disposition as required.
  • Contribute to the growth of Eaton Actuation Systems Division through participation and contribution to process improvements, team activities, and goals.
  • Lead failure investigations to determine root cause and corrective action.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 5 years of product design experience.
  • Minimum of  5 years of experience with mechanical engineering analyses (performance, stress, tolerance) and associated tools.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience creating models and drawings using Pro/E, Catia, or other similar tool.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now and in the future.
  • This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. ‘Green Card Holder’), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with electro-mechanical products
  • Aerospace experience 
  • Translating technical guidelines from supervisor into usable data applicable to the particular engineering assignment. Some evaluation, originality or ingenuity is required.
  • Estimating the amount of engineering effort required to create technical deliverables.
  • Personal contacts with work group and related functions require normal courtesy and tact.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to solve complex problems in a structured manner.
  • Knowledge of adjacent engineering fields (motors, electronics, software, etc.)
  • Experience leading a technical project from concept to production.
  • Design for six sigma
Position Criteria:
  • Willing to travel up to 10% of the time.
