Lead Product Engineer - Motors Centre of Excellence
 
location: South Molton, North Devon, UK
 
The primary function for this position is to work within the Eaton Centre of Excellence supporting manufacturing divisions in the production of electrical products; other responsibilities include failure and root cause analysis (Acceptance test failures, nil hour returns and service failures for which travel will be required approx. 10%). Accountability includes timely support to manufacturing on issues deemed detrimental to production schedules and execution of highly technical projects, predominantly of a development engineering nature (prototype build and testing).
 
Typical products include electric motors and actuators for a variety of civil & military aerospace applications, electromagnetic brakes, solenoids and transformers. This is a senior position within a small, highly motivated technical team supporting the larger engineering and manufacturing department in this specialist discipline.
 
Essential Functions:
 
  • Local technical lead for continuous improvement activity relating to Electrical products
  • Support Manufacturing Engineering with design related issues including review and approval of permits, concessions and Engineering Change Requests
  • Evaluate, select, and adapt criteria, techniques, and procedures to solve manufacturing issues
  • Possess systematic problem solving know-how and methodology
  • Conduct research, tests and analytical tasks to develop data for solution to problems for which precedents may be limited or not applicable
  • Design for reliability (DFR), Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) are expected, leading to practical production designs in conjunction with other disciplines within the Engineering and Manufacturing departments
  • Support ideation events and design studies. Prepare and review engineering proposals, performance specifications, technical reports and papers
  • Keep informed on trends and developments within specialty or general area of activity and participate in knowledge exchange sessions within the wider company
  • The role will entail close working relationships with other functions within the South Molton engineering and manufacturing departments for the majority (approx.70%) of the time, specifically with regards to sustaining and new product development activities. The remainder of the time will be dedicated to supporting continuous improvement of the manufacturing and test facilities at South Molton, which will involve liaising with the Motors COE team (design authority) at Titchfield

Qualifications

Qualifications:
 
  • Engineering Degree in relevant subject (e.g. Electrical, Mechatronics, etc.) is an asset
  • Relevant work experience in the area of electromechanical component design and manufacturing support up to 20 kilowatt range
  • Stator and Rotor design for manufacture
  • Strong technical problem solving skills
  • Transformer, Rectifier and wound component (Inductors & chokes) testing
  • Communications skills – both verbal and written with ability to generate and convey status reports
  • Technical report authoring
  • Practical understanding of design techniques for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
  • Motor design for the Aerospace Industry is preferred
  • Capable of working effectively and efficiently under pressure
  • Capable of leading projects/investigations
  • Strong collaborative and problem solving skills
