Eaton has an opening for a Polymer Composite Engineer on the Corporate Research & Technology team in Southfield, Michigan.
 
The successful candidate will be a strong technical professional capable of leading Research and Development programs in a large, diversified global company.  The candidate will be able to advance the state-of-the art in the general field of materials and materials processing, and more specifically in the field of polymers and polymer nanocomposites, to serve the future needs of Eaton products in Electrical and Industrial applications. The individual will conceive, propose, plan, execute, manage, and report on diverse applied R&D projects for which the materials and manufacturing processes play a critical role in achieving the product's function and technical performance.
 
Essential Functions:
 
Working with multidisciplinary and geographically diverse teams, the individual will
  • Demonstrate technical leadership in the area of polymer composite processing, material selection and analysis.
  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend combined material, design, and manufacturing processes that best meet the application requirements.
  • Specify, plan, and oversee analytical and experimental work qualifying the proposed materials and process options.
  • Perform hands-on design, analysis, and experimental work as needed to demonstrate technical feasibility.
  • Identify and work with external technology sources including academic institutions, consultants, test labs, material suppliers, and material processors to qualify or develop the proposed technologies.
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively with R&D, product engineering, manufacturing, marketing and Business Units globally to deliver on technical concepts and capabilities to drive business growth
  • Ability to be self-directed. Driving and delivering on multiple project tasks with prioritization while maintaining focus on key milestones and goals
  • Work with other corporate and divisional staff to define future research and technology development efforts.
  • Compile and interpret analysis and test results providing conclusions, recommendations, and opinions for other engineers and management to act upon.
  • Write and present project funding proposals including government contract and/or grants.
  • Work effectively with diverse and remotely located global teams.
  • Use Value Proposition Design/Business Model Canvas and Design for Six Sigma tools as appropriate
  • Direct work of laboratory technicians as necessary

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or Science from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience practicing materials science or engineering OR a PhD Degree in Engineering or Science from an accredited institution with academic or industrial experience practicing materials science.
Position Criteria:
  • Possess strong business acumen and the ability to understand and formulate compelling technical and business value propositions.
  • Proven track record for IP generation or publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals is a must. 
  • Demonstrate ability to think innovatively and strategically, and communicate complex technical ideas effectively in both technical and commercial environment.
  • Candidates should demonstrate strong initiative and drive for results as well as good interpersonal and teaming behaviors.
  • Demonstrated ability to take idea from concept to production
  • Good written and verbal English language skills are required.
  • Project management experience is highly desired.
  • Position requires up to 10% travel domestic and occasional international.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in Materials Engineering, Material Science, Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering, Chemical Engineering
  • 3+ years’ experience in the polymer composite/nanocomposite processing.
  • Deep understanding of interfacial chemistry and the morphology associated with fiber reinforced composite with carbon fiber, glass fiber and ceramic fibers.
  • Deep knowledge and hands on experience related to the processing of multifunctional systems including synthesis and compounding of polymer nanocomposites, ceramics, and/or metals through both in-situ and ex-situ processes.
  • Hands on experience with twin screw extrusion, injection molding, compression molding, and 3D printing is highly desired.
  • Broad familiarity with high temperature polymers such as PEEK/PAEK and thermoset is preferred.
  • Specific expertise and hands-on experience in the use of analytical instrumentation to characterize the chemistry, morphology, and mechanical, electrical, and thermal behavior of multi-material systems in particular for nano-scale composites and their constituent material interfaces.

  • DMA – dynamic mechanical analysis
  • Electrical and thermal conductivity
